BHIX facilitates Clinical Data Exchange among a variety of data systems, promoting and supporting a patient-centric view of clinical information. The technology vendors BHIX has selected are Initiate Systems, Inc. and MedPlus, Inc. Health information exchange can reduce the time spent requesting key information from other institutions. Quicker access to medical information can assist clinicians to make better informed decisions and delivery better patient care. Health information exchange can also help reduce the time you or your organization spends responding to data requests from other institutions.

BHIX offers a series of related services to assist Participants in making the most of their participation in BHIX. Among the Technical Efficiencies BHIX can facilitate for Participants are: Document Management and Imaging; eMPI services, including duplication minimization and remediation; Registration facilitation; and other electronic medical record (EMR) integration services.

In the future, it is anticipated that BHIX will add clinical messaging services, including Clinical Decision Support. 

The BHIX expansion plans also include roll-out of a patient Personal Health Record (PHR) feature, whereby patients can become more actively involved in managing their health information and health status.

At the core of BHIX services is a governance structure that promotes development of policies and procedures safeguarding patient privacy and ensuring security. BHIX works collaboratively with various statewide workgroups to ensure that policies developed for BHIX reflect the dynamic health information exchange (HIE) landscape.
